The tilapia fish is a member of the cichlid family and it is commonly found in freshwater, but can live in brackish water too. It has an elongated body with a large mouth and sharp teeth. Tilapia has a wide variety of colours, including red, black or gold.
Tilapia can live up to 10 years and weigh up to 10 pounds.
They are creatures that feed on plants as well as insects, worms and crustaceans. Their diet consists mostly of algae or aquatic plants when they are young but shifts to more animal matter when they are older.
This fish has a mild flavour and firm texture that works well with many different cuisines. Tilapia is inexpensive to raise and easy to cook—it can be prepared in a variety of ways including baking, grilling or frying. It can also be baked with herbs or spices to create unique flavours.
Storage
For immediate consumption please store in the fridge until completely defrosted, then cook it the preferred way. For future consumption please keep in the freezer.
